In an interview with Edge, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada stated that the team is possibly leaving the JRPG genre behind after the release of Final Fantasy XIII. He goes on to say that they plan on creating "something new".

"I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special, and that it’s going to be well received by the audience," Wada says in the interview. "But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play."

Before you believe that this means the beloved franchise is over, just think of the possibilities of Final Fantasy in a new direction.

Philip: Interesting. I would love to see Square do something other than JRPGs. A refreshing change is welcome in my books.

Jan 07 2010 05:04:05 On one hand I love JRPG's and can't wait for the newest Final Fantasy, but on the other hand I agree that the formula is getting a little stale. My favorite Square games are all from over ten years ago, which doesn't bode well for the future of the company. I hope they can find a way to mix the two styles and create something new, much like how Chrono Trigger felt completely new without actually straying that far from the formula.

Square Enix to Stop Developing JRPGs? Jan 07 2010 17:12:52 I'm going to go out on a limb here. My wife is catching up on her JRPGs in a big way. She's playing Ar Tonelico right now, and she loves the characters and the writing. The game isn't much of a challenge (except for this one part where they forgot to tell you that you can jump...) but it's surprisingly deep and entertaining.
