Dev Spotlight: Turn 10's third game in the Forza series.

Instant Impressions:

forzamountainMicrosoft has been downsizing their internal studios for a while now but one studio they still own has been pumping out games at solid pace. Turn 10 released their highly anticipated demo of Forza Motorspot 3 today and racing fans around the world rejoiced.

As a big fan of the first two games in the series I was curious to see how the new engine looked and other additions Turn 10 added to the series. I am happy to report that after spending 30 min with the demo I am in fully in love with Forza 3.

Visually the game pops off the screen and for the first time in the series you will be impressed with this engines visuals. Beautiful landscapes off in the distance surrounded by detailed trackside objects combined with the ultra smooth solid 60 frames per second really come together beautifully.

All of the solid racing mechanics that we have come to love from the series are back and better than ever. This time around you can choose a cockpit view which I was not excited for. After trying it on a couple races I do not think I will ever go back to the behind the car view. Having a racing game run at a solid 60 FPS is just fantastic for those of us who want to hit those perfect lines.

Another new features is a GRID / DiRT 2 like rewind system that lets you rewind an error or crash at any moment giving you another chance to pull off that perfect turn.

forza3closeThe menu system is fantastic and simple in the demo, but it screams mature and sexy. Combine this with the low ambient music and you have a great setup to what you are in store for once you hit the pavement.

If I could see any issues with the demo it would be the slight annoying load times but once the game loads you will quickly forget about the last 30 seconds of your life.

Forza 2 fans should rejoice in the latest game from Turn 10. They have updated the graphics big time, removed most of the jaggies yet kept the frame rate rock solid. The one track in the demo is far more impressive than any other track in Forza 2 visually.  Get ready for one hell of a simulation this October.

Forza dominates! Everyone else is inferior! My copy is reserved at Gamestop.

Anyway, I wonder if the rewind system will be tied into the difficulty system. Also, how much will the drifting/drag be a part of the game?

So, I just played the demo. I like the new features such as autobrake, manual with clutch, etc. While I have the difficulty as hard as possible (I think they dumbed down the AI some) minus the clutch. This game appears to have something for every skill level. The in cockpit view looks great; you don't need the HUD just read the instrument panel. Amazing game, absolutely amazing.

btw, once I get the full game (already reserved) and set the shifting to the right stick I will use the clutch.

I didn't see the clutch option. Then again I only played momentarily, but I was very impressed. It is a very pretty game. I can't wait to drive and Alfa Romeo Competizione or a Ferrari 458 Italia in this game.

Hopefully Drift is a big part, because I'm pretty much terrible at circuit and drag races. But I'm willing to put days of time into nailing drift races, because I absolutely love them. I'm gonna have my specially customized Evo VIII with my signature number (707) all over it. And then gonna rise to the top of the multiplayer drift leaderboards.

Remember to hit left on the d-pad to get a PGR like Kudos system for Drift... very cool little feature. They even have leaderboards for this moad.

Oh my god... a sim-driving game that's actually fun. Of course, I drive with the majority of the assists on, but if that's what it takes to be fun, then that's what I'll do.

The demo was really fun but lacked in showing off some new stuff. Why not show off the new kudos more instead of discovering it by hit left on the d-pad? How come you get the front splash of Forza 3 and then you hit start and you select your car.. where's the UI a little?

The actual racing was really enjoyable though. They really have made it more friendly to new racers to this game who couldn't even handle it very well with assists in Forza 2.

They should sell quite a few copies all-in-all, and I'm just happy to say I've got this one reserved as well.

See I think this post is exactly what they wanted. Its a Sim yet most people will be able to play it without being frustrated. Might upset some very hardcore racers but this is a great move to capture the other 95% who just want to have fun.

I'm a hardcore racer (no assists, manual, AI on hard and I usually get a podium) and I'm glad they made it easier for new players: more folks to play against. My brother played it and said with all the assists on it almost feels like an arcade racer.

I agree with Monster the drift should not have been hidden like that it makes me wonder it will play a role or just an afterthought. Maybe you could play each race in the career mode drift or regular style and has no bearing otherwise on the game. Find out soon enough.

Though I do hope they make the AI harder. Maybe a forth AI level.

I had to get on and say that the demo is actually more impressive than I originally thought it was. It does have Hot Laps in the demo where you can race against other players' ghost, or just your own that you set in Hot Lap wile trying to get a good lap. You can also do the Kudos Laps as well, although they're no where near as fun as the Kudos sliding in PGR.

Things I've noticed from the demo after playing it a little more:

- You exactly have a "full cockpit view" like I've heard. It's more of a left to right cockpit view.. Even PGR4 had a full cockpit view.

- There are leaderboards, and you can access them before you got to load up the race.

- From the leaderboards you can go for hot laps by pressing the A button at the top of the very top of the leaderboard.

- On the leaderboard page you can do either a Hot Lap or go for some Kudos on the Kudos leaderboard.

- Looks like the Turn 10 devs have a little arrow from their Turn 10 logo beside their gamertag on the leaderboard (could be wrong here).

- You can race against other racers ghosts. I've not figured out how you let others race your ghost.. and it's not based on rank because I went up into the top 1,100 folks and people still had the race against ghost option. Wierd.

I tried it with all the assists and I don't see any way anyone couldn't play this game. All you do is hold the gas down, and move your car left and right. How much easier can someone make a racing game? It brakes for you! For me personally it's not as fun, but I can care less if it gives me more people to play against, all I know is I wont play it safe.

Rollovers + Trucks and SUV's are a welcome addition too! This will make Cat & Mouse a little more interesting (for the times when you want fun instead of the perfect line).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forza_3

"New additions to the game include an in-car driving view, one button assisted driving, vehicle rollover, and for the first time in the series, trucks and SUVs, as well as the ability to paint race cars (the previous game in the series allowed only production and tuner cars to be painted). Also included will be the ability to create in-game videos and upload them to the Forza Motorsport website. Forza Motorsport 3 will be shipped on two discs, but can be played completely off the first; the second disc serves as the "installation disc," which will contain some additional cars and tracks.

A new single-player season mode will put the player through a completely personalized racing calendar that includes more than 200 different events, including circuit, oval, drag, drift, and timed events; no two calendars will be the same."
