Vespasian's New Years Resolutions for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo
Written by Vespasian Wednesday, 06 January 2010 11:48
My New Years resolution was to be more punctual. It’s not starting off so well, as evidenced by the fact that this piece is sliding into the home plate about a week too late. The cord has only just been cut on 2010 though, so proposing resolutions for gaming’s big three still seems appropriate. Here is what I’d like to hear Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony resolve to do in 2010 and beyond:

Sony
The Playstation brand is on the mend, and we vow this year to capitalize on the inertia we built up in 2009. Look for our games to be more visually appealing as we really flex our hardware’s graphics muscle. And expect continued improvements to our online experience, including a for fee membership tier that delivers more of what hardcore gamers expect. Oh, and don’t worry about our Wand technology degenerating into an absurd gimmick. We plan to set a standard early on for judicious use of this technology, rather than forcing developers to needlessly shoehorn it into every game. Finally, we’ll kick Halo’s teeth in with our very own exclusive, flagship FPS.
Microsoft
We recognize that our appeal to hardcore gamers has paid huge dividends for us. We won’t lose sight of this fact, even as we continue to develop our new Natal interface. Our customers can rest assured that quality titles won’t be buried in an avalanche of uninspired, casual fare. If controller-less gaming is what our customers want, we’ll position our platform accordingly. But barring overwhelming demand, the traditional gaming experience will not be unceremoniously dumped in favor of wild arm waving and embarrassing gestures on our watch. We also vow to increase the number of allowable friends on Xbox LIVE to infinity.
Nintendo
Look for us to return to our historical emphasis on quality, limiting the amount of much-maligned “shovel ware” released on our system. And we will silence, finally and forever, those who label our novel control scheme as a gimmick, by serving up the killer app gamers have been waiting for (e.g. Star Wars: The Lightsaber Massacre on Endor). While our competitors play catch-up on the immersive controls front, we’ll press forward, encouraging the development of games that use motion controls sensibly rather than awkwardly forcing them in. We’ll also make online play a priority on our console, taking a cue from our competitors. And the next Zelda game will blow your mind.
There’s my two cents. But I’d really like to hear your opinions. How about it, LR? Where do you want the companies to take things in 2010? I look forward to your comments.

Jan 06 2010 19:42:25 I tell you what: If Nintendo made Star Wars: The Lightsaber Massacre on Endor I would finally buy a Wii to go with my XBox and PS3. And then I'd probably go into a coma from all of the awesomeness.

Vespasian's New Years Resolutions for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo
Jan 06 2010 20:13:52 At some point MS will have to cut the original Xbox off of Live. They have said for a while that this is the only reason we are stuck with 100 friends. Halo 2 needs to die off.. then I believe they will make the switch.

Vespasian's New Years Resolutions for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo
Jan 06 2010 21:58:12 Microsoft should commit to rearranging their Live service's fee so it's either free to play online, or so it pays us back for our $50. I would even be happy with a reduction in price.

Re: Vespasian's New Years Resolutions for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo
Jan 07 2010 19:24:24 Jason you gotta realize that they have 15+ million Gold members.. or something in that range. Why on earth would they eliminate that revenue when people are paying it by the millions.
Anyone holding up PSN or the Wii online as reasons for this switch are drinking something strong. They are still far behind Live .. I actually expect Sony to start charging for online here this year. Nintendo already does it on a per title basis.. Why on earth would they stop charging for live? People pay it.. The small vocal minority that have no issue wasting hundreds of dollars a month on other things in their life yet feel the need to bitch about a couple bucks a month will not change their mind. |

Jan 08 2010 00:19:17 Sony's "flagship FPS"... is an utter failure. I played it, It's horrible. However, I would like to see Nintendo stop allowing shovelware on their system. Probably won't happen though.

Vespasian's New Years Resolutions for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo
Jan 08 2010 00:56:14 Microsoft: Keep up the good work, you're ripping the hell out of the weakness of Sony's PSN. You're rocking solid with old IP's. Focus on building a bigger and better library! How about bringing me a little Huxley and True Fantasy Live while you're at it.
Sony: Build on your PSN even further. There's been improvements within the Playstation Store, now make the move to a unison network across your entire library of games. Advertise the games better and work on not losing your entire catalog to Microsoft and company. Nintendo: Bring a more serious experience on the Wii for the hardcore gamers salivating for it. Your pockets will be lined with even more gold. I don't even care much about an online experience for the Wii, I would just love to tempt myself to buy one like I did back when I was 12 years old playing the N64. |
