In Ubisoft's financial update for its third fiscal quarter, the company mentions something very interesting about an upcoming "episode" of the Assassin's Creed saga that will feature a multiplayer component. The press release makes it clear that coming in 2010 is "a new episode of Assassin’s Creed, which will be the first in the series to have an online multiplayer mode."

To clarify Ubisoft's statement, IGN UK contacted Ubisoft and received a few answers about what this new concept is.

Ubisoft explained to IGN that this is a new project and not an expansion to Assassin's Creed II. The title picks up where Assassin's Creed II left off and will feature Ezio and (wait for it) a multiplayer component. Heaven knows why.

Philip: A new Assassin's Creed game? This year? Multiplayer? I may adore Assassin's Creed II, but this is very unprecedented. I think someone at Ubisoft decided that milking the series will please the fans. Dumb fans, maybe. Assassin's Creed does not need multiplayer, and if they wanted to include a multiplayer component, it would be wiser to turn this concept into an expansion pack for Assassin's Creed II.

Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Incoming? Jan 15 2010 06:24:48 Honestly, I can see a sort of run around the map dueling people and throwing people off ledges thing working, but what would really be nice is a Special Ops sort of mode with co-op.
