Old Man of Gaming: Co-op With Your Kids

the_old_man_of_gaming

For some time, there has been a titanic struggle for humanity and if everything that Halo tells us is true, it will continue 540 years into the future. We, as a people, may not be able to solve these seemingly insurmountable problems, but playing cooperative modes of Halo with your son or daughter can help you save humanity - or at least in your game room.

Cooperative (co-op) play is one of the best innovations in video gaming, period. It can bring parents and children together, via gaming. I realize the replay value for friends and increasing the play time of the games, but, more than that, a good co-op video game brings an external factor to play. It not only challenges you and your children mentally, it allows you to play together, let’s you see how you stack up in battle, shows how you would make moral decisions and allows your son or daughter to take charge. Those reasons aside, gaming cooperatively with your children can also create a bond between you and him or her that may have escaped you in the past.

To clarify, I am NOT talking about playing Monopoly here. HALO is a mature game and should be treated as such. But life itself is mature and, at times, can be unforgiving. Why not see if you're up to the task of saving it?

The Halo series of games provides some of the best co-op play to be had in video games. The content of the Halo series, story line and character development lend themselves to outstanding game play, as well.

While there are many aspects of older gamers to be explored (i.e. co-op and play time with children, specific games directed at older players, marketing possibilities for publishers, etc.), my purpose here is to talk about playing video games with your children. If you are an older gamer and don’t have children, co-op is still a great experience with your friends. If you don’t have any friends, well that’s a problem. Try single player mode.

So, if not Halo, what co-op game will you play with your children? If not now, when? It is time to get into the game, or another co-op game with your child, even if you are slow and old.
