Killzone 2

Let me first start this review by saying I prefer my Xbox over my PS3 and that I disliked the first Killzone due to the gameplay. *waits for the mob to drop their pitchforks and torches* Now that all that’s out of the way, let me say I really enjoyed Killzone 2. It is one of the better shooters I have played in a while and is a big hit for the Playstation 3.

The Killzone 2 story is about the invasion of Helghan, the Helghast home world. You play as Sergeant Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, a member of Alpha Squad of the ISA which also includes your three other amigos of Alpha, Natko, Rico, and Garza. The goal is to punch a hole through the defense of the Helghast and capture Emperor Scolar Visari, the leader of the Helghast and ruler of Helghan. Visari is like Hitler and the Heglhast are like the Nazis. Guerrilla Games based a lot of the Helghast off of the Nazis and their propaganda, like posters and symbols. So in simpler terms, the Helghast are Future Nazis. Which is very cool, I am really into the whole 1940s vibe and I enjoy watching/reading anything on it.

The number one thing that makes Killzone so awesome and mind blowing is the graphics. All you naysayers can go swallow a dull butter knife. I realize that Guerrilla doesn’t use bright colors, but they don't need to because the game is f***ing beautiful. When I first started to play I had to stop for a second because I jizzed in my pants (calling Andy Samberg to the building). If this didn't happen to you when you first fired the game up, it means you are blind.

One cool wrinkle to the gameplay is that the environments are destructible to a point. You can blast away concrete on pillars, blow up barrels and knock down tin piece of metal or wood with gunfire. This allows you to dismantle and remove cover that the enemy is using, which is extra helpful in multiplayer. The sound complements the game nicely with great sound affects and good dialog. The dialog wasn't as corny as I thought it would be, which makes me glad.

Now there is one problem I have with Killzone and that is the controls; quite frankly, they’re sluggish. Even with my sensitivity cranked to the max, it still doesn't move quite right. I hope Guerrilla will address this problem.

After you complete the great single player, which can take anywhere from 7- 9 hours, it’s time to tackle Warzone. It’s the multiplayer mode of Killzone which allows up to 32 players to battle on 8 different maps. There is 5 different missions that can take place in one level. Body Count (deathmatch), Search and Destroy, Search and Retrieve (CTF), Capture and Hold (domination), and finally Assassination (kill a specific target). Search and Destroy is either defend or assault on a target and you must plant a bomb on said target. There are two plant points and after you plant the bombs you must defend them. The way you switch from game mode to mode is awesome: you stay in the map and it will pick the next mode and will put the location on the map. You don't need to reload the map, it will just keep picking the game modes until all the modes have been played. Slick and unique.

The mulitplayer is a class-based shooter… well sort of. Actually, it’s more like Call of Duty with the perks system. You unlock classes by leveling up, rather than being presented with them from the beginning. There is a scout, medic, engineer, and more, each with their own primary ability. Take the medic for instance: you can heal down teammates and if you do it enough, you will unlock a badge that will let you now throw health packs. It’s a new combo of class-based shooter+perks. In all of the matches I have played I never received any lag, which is fantastic. I really enjoy the multiplayer portion of KZ2 and Guerrilla Games has said they will support it in the future with more content. There is also clan support that involves tournaments against other clans which is very cool.

My biggest issue with KZ2 so far is the HUGE deadzone on the analog sticks, but otherwise, tweaking the Y axis sensitivity made a big difference for me.

I'm convincing my PS3 owning friend to buy it, but I'm not so sure after Ryan yelled in my ear for an hour straight
