Rock Band Song Review: Week of 7.15.09

4.0/5 (1 vote)

Oh my God, two weeks in a row where I not only can listen to the music, but legitimately LOVE it? Well that's just crazy. Harmonix is trying to make it up to me for all the metal? Yeah, I'm sure that's it. Gotta be.

In addition to the currently-making-my-week trio of songs from indie-darlings The Dead Weather, we've got a three pack of live songs from Judas Priest (there's a ton of them in RB now) and normal, budget priced tunes from someone called The Big Dipper. It's a really nice mix, actually.

All ratings are out of 5.

"Hang You From the Heavens" - The Dead Weather

The song itself is absolutely kickin', but it's honestly just two riffs over and over and over... and that's when you're actually playing (which is only over about half the song). Not fun in the slightest.

"Treat Me Like Your Mother" - The Dead Weather

There is still a tiny bit of repetition here, but the riffs this time could destroy your head. Absolutely excellent, and the solo is just further proof of what I've been saying for years: that Jack White's guitar translates to plastic PERFECTLY.

"No Hassle Night" - The Dead Weather

Despite a really creative little intro, the song really is just paint-by-numbers, do-it-in-yr-sleep mediocre chord charting. Skip.

"Dissident Aggressor" - Judas Priest

Wow, really lots of fun. The solo approaches craziness, but stops just short of sucking the fun out of the jam. I like, very nice.

"Eat Me Alive" - Judas Priest

Didn't have fun with this one. Repetitive and too many strums for my liking. Also, the solo is pretty-to-very ridiculous. The "bad" kind of metal.

"Prophecy" - Judas Priest

I kept thinking to myself "why'd they pick this song? It's metal for babies." Then the solo hit and I knew exactly why this had to be in Rock Band.

"All Going Out Together" - The Big Dipper

Y.A.W.N.

"She's Fetching" - The Big Dipper

Odd, interesting chord progression, but ultimately a dull flop that I won't ever play again. Sadly.

"Young Bums" - The Big Dipper

Okay, now that was a really fun little beginning track. Interesting, and it kept me on my toes. This is what Harmonix should be shooting for when charting those baby pop hits that sell so much.

Roundup

  • Buy: Treat Me Like Your Mother, Dissident Aggressor
  • Fans Consider: Prophecy, Young Bums
  • Avoid: Hang You From the Heavens, No Hassle Night, Eat Me Alive, All Going Out Together, She's Fetching

Song of the Week: "Treat Me Like Your Mother"

Not only is the song lots of fun to play and translates beautifully to the plastic guitar, but it's one of the absolute best songs of this year. Jack White is crazy good at keeping things fresh (and big props to Harmonix for netting Dead Weather tunes rather than something by the Raconteurs, White's other [inferior] side project).

I don't dare try and predict what comes next week since I've loved 2 weeks in a row. That probably spells more country... I'd like some more Dinosaur Jr. or Radiohead at the moment, personally.

Yeah, I just damned myself with a terrible week there.
