Rock Band Song Review: Week of 7.9.09
Written by Aaron Marsh Thursday, 09 July 2009 14:02

Oh how I've dreamt of this day... Green Day has finally found their way to Rock Band. Bless all the gods of rock, punk, pop and every other genre they flirt with, because I'm a lil' stoaked.
In addition to the three pack (which, as you know, is just the beginning of the Green Day blitz) from 21st Century Breakdown, you can download 8 other songs contained in yet another festival pack. This time: the Mayhem Tour.
All scores are out of 5.
"Know Your Enemy" - Green Day
Repetitive as a bitch, but the riff is absolute fun and the solo is a great time if you're a little nooblet. Also, I love Green Day.

"East Jesus Nowhere" - Green Day
Uh oh, the chords soured this time. Crappiness abounds. The chorus sucks pretty hard, but the solo redeems it a bit.

"21 Guns" - Green Day
This is likely inflated due to just how mothereffing genius this song truly is, but the solo really did give me chills. It's all plucky, ripe-for-the-noob excellence that no one should be without. Did I mention that I, in fact, love Green Day?

"Disposable Teens" - Marilyn Manson
I guess it was national chord day and someone forgot to notify me. Blech.

"Conquer All" - Behemoth
Really a lot of fun to play if the blood pouring from my ears doesn't distract you too much. the ho-pos are especially rad.

"What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse" - Black Dahlia Murder
Ewww gallops... though the other half of the song is hella fun. Solo is straight out of my dreams.

"Hammer Smashed Face" - Cannibal Corpse
Lots of insanely fast non-Miserlou (long lines of the same note rather than playing one note at a time) strumming is a massive turn off for me. And there's not a seriously cool solo to combat it. Oh well.

"Empire of the Gun" - God Forbid
The kind of metal I really enjoy playing. Not ridiculously impossible, but still nice and tough. The bridge+solo is utterly fantastic.

"Embedded" - Job for a Cowboy
I feel like a broken record, but yeah, it's a lot of fun. It kind of calms down once it hits the solo weirdly enough, but the first half of the song is one of the best of the week.

"Black Magic" - Slayer
Annoying strumming and there's a TON of it. The solo is also incredibly hard in the not fun way. Skip.

"This Is Exile" - Whitechapel
Oh no. I cannot deal with the ridiculous strumming again nor with how jaw-droppingly awful the song itself is. Gaaah, stay away.

Roundup
- Buy: 21 Guns, Conquer All, Empire of a Gun
- Fans Consider: Know Your Enemy, What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse, Embedded
- Avoid: East Jesus Nowhere, Disposable Teens, Hammer Smashed Face, Black Magic, This Is Exile
Bias, bias, bias. Yes, I'm self-aware. Doesn't matter though, because everyone needs to have the song. Why? Because I say so.
The other songs this week, despite how fun some of them are to play, are just never going to grace my guitar again. I can't deal with that kind of hardcore-ness in my life. Am I a little girl? It's very possible. Still, there's plenty of fun here, I just have to go with my favorite song in a tiebreaker.
What'll we have next week? I'm hoping we have just a serious pop fetish for the next few weeks to balance out how GRAAAAAA METALSMASHKILL everything has been lately.

Rock Band Song Review: Week of 7.9.09
Jul 09 2009 20:11:12 Most of what I have read really crap on the new Greenday album. I have yet to hear anything other than the very average first single... I was thinking of buying the pack just because it makes sense to have some Greenday in RockBand...

Jul 09 2009 20:21:04 Not sure what you're reading, but the album got decent-to-good reviews. It's surprisingly catchy and good, though the fat needed to be trimmed.
And as much as you SHOULD buy 21 Guns, don't get this trio (especially if you're not going to sing). Just wait for the classics pack to hit at some point. They just haven't announced a date, but it's for sure coming. |

Rock Band Song Review: Week of 7.9.09
Jul 09 2009 21:16:52 Biased much?
The country songs are more complicated and fun to play than 21 guns... ...though the Green Day songs are friggin awesome nonetheless. |
