Wii Shout: Sporty Sports

Sports! It’s HUGE on the Wii, and since there isn’t much going on in Wii world this week, I’m going to briefly touch on the subject.

We all know that the Wii has an overflowing amount of fun, yet lame extracurricular sports games. Minigolf, dodgeball, darts, bowling…you name it, you got it. EA also has there default selection of games there, with Madden, NBA Live, Tiger Woods, and more. The only thing is…up to this point, all of those EA professional games have ended in the words “All-Play.” Now I know that the family environment that the Wii primarily exists in encouraged developers to specialize the game to adhere to a less-skilled group of gamers…

Now EA has gone and done what I didn't have in mind...they just altogether removed one of their sports properties from the Wii. Recently, they said in a press release that they weren't going to release a version of NCAA Football 2010 to the Nintendo Wii. That's a bit harsh don't ya think? Just because you don't want to use a team to make an exclusive game for the Wii doesn't mean you just drop it! Fans of the Wii love sports just as much as the rest of us and you're saying you can't support a version of the game for the Wii? Your "All-Play" didn't sell well because it wasn't what the real college football fans wanted. Little kids aren't going to go lunging for the NBA All-Play or NCAA Football All-Play. They are going to be going for Carnival Games or Animal Crossing. The parents of those kids are the ones interested in buying those games...but if they are kiddie-fied, then the chance of them buying it on the Wii goes down the tube.

We need professional games on the Wii. I don't mind if you throw in some controls that use the Wii's motion control, but I don't always have to play on easy to have fun. Just give me a human (not mascot) team that I can control all at once and a serious single player mode. Focus on the things that make the regular versions of those games fun. They require skill and brain processes meant for people older than kindergarteners. Also, there is a side effect of making these games. THEY SELL. VERY WELL.

Ya know what DOESN'T SELL WELL? Crappy sports games...even ones made by companies other than yourselves. So buck up and outplay those 'other' developers.

I hate to see Nintendo leaving more serious owners of their system out in the cold. I guess quality sports titles simply aren't "casual" enough to appeal to the Wii's audience (at least as it is perceived by many developers).
