Backwards compatibility that is.

Even with the announce of the price drop, and the PS3 Slim, many gamers are confounded and frustrated with the fact that most versions of the system can't play their now retro PS2 games. According to Sony's John Koller we're never going to get the desired feature either.

But why should they let us play our dinky little PS2 games on their big bad-ass system anyway?

The answer: They shouldn't.

Think about it from the business perspective. If you give gamers the ability to play their old games, they will, and therefore not be as inclined to buy new games.  Not the mention buy and download (air quote) updated (air quote) versions.  With the rise of DLC and the digital arcade market, Sony and Microsoft have launched a new profitable business model.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a perfect example of this. It's a PS1 game now download-able on Xbox Live. Why should I bust out my old copy on disk when I can just load it from my Dashboard? I mean, I have to turn on my PS2, change the input on my TV, and blah blah blah... too much hassle. And we're Americans dammit! We don't like to put effort into things! We want a one button solution!

So trade in your PS2 and your games and then buy them all over again like a good little consumer. I know I will.

Good point.

My biggest problem is that they still ship PS2 games. Thats where the coherency of thier model starts to suffer.

The Wii plays Gamecube games, though. Doesn't it only make sense for a modicum of backwards compatibility to exist just so they can 'keep up' with Nintendo? To be honest, I have no idea who is winning the Console Wars nowadays.

This is why I will never trade in my PS3 for a Slim PS3. Mine is old enough to be backwards compatable.
