Game Movie News Roundup

Alright folks, let's shift this sucker into high gear:

First off, Bruce Willis has been confirmed to be half of the lead cast in the upcoming Kane & Lynch film based on the popular (?) XBox 360game Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, from Eidos Interactive. Mr. Die Hard With A Paycheck will be assuming the role of Kane, the flawed (and wickedly scarred) mercenary who's saddled with under-medicated psychopath Lynch as he attempts to win the freedom of his captive wife and daughter. The film is to be directed by Simon Crane, who was the second unit director on such films as Tomb Raider (sweet!) and Troy (ruh-roh), and stunt coordinator on Hancock (meh), X-Men: The Last Stand (ok), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (now we're talking). Production will be handled by Adrian Askarieh (Hitman...double ruh-roh). Casting for the role of Lynch remains to be completed, but my vote goes to a bulked up, bat-shit crazy Billy Bob Thornton.
Next up, the first episode of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Lineage live action short films will be up on October 27th. The films will act as a prequel of sorts, revealing the events in the life of Ezio's father Giovanni Auditore Da Firenze, who himself was an assassin. If the effects in the film look familiar, that's because Hybride, the effects company behind such films as “Sin City” and “Snakes On A Plane”, is handling them. The film is looking really slick, and should add a lot of depth to the game. I have a quick teaser for the short:
Here is a rundown of some other upcoming game to movie adaptations that are either in production, have completed filming, or are complete bullshit.
Upcoming releases
- Tekken (2009)
- The Legend of Spyro 3D (2009)
- Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (2009)
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 28, 2010)
- The King of Fighters (2010)
- BloodRayne III: Warhammer (2010)
- Clock Tower (2010)
- Mortal Kombat: Devastation (2010)
- Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
- Dead Space (2011)
- Gears of War (2011)
- Army Of Two (2011)
Hispanic! At The Disco - You don't even WANT to know how many more game to movie adaptations are in the works and how many sound like the most craptastic ideas ever. I'm all for a film adaptation of a game whose story/premise lends itself to a film adaptation (i.e. Gears of War, Dead Space) but come on, do we NEED another Bloodrayne movie? I'm still trying to wash the bits of skull that are stuck in my couch from the last time I tried to watch one and my mouth tried to reach around and eat my brain.

Game Movie News Roundup
Oct 21 2009 22:05:57 Very informative article, Manny. Kane and Lynch as a movie sounds pretty sweet, though. But good gravy, a Spyro movie? A Tekken movie? A King of Fighters movie? The wise guys who thought it would be cool to make a movie based off those games need to be slapped in the face.
But what's even worse than the movies in the list are movie adaptions of Asteroids and Joust. How can you make movies based off of games that have no story whatsoever? |
