Major Nelson Says, "No Blu-Ray for 360"

blu-ray_logoIn case anyone still cared about using their Xbox 360 to watch Blu-Ray movies, Major Nelson just dropped a bomb hoping to nuke your dreams. In his blog, he tried to cover up Steve Ballmer's slip-up in his Gizmodo interview.

"During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360. I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360."

Sure, Major. We believe you 100%.

Seriously, though, take a look at Steve's Gizmodo interview and read carefully what he has to say.

"And as far as the media stuff you're doing with the Xbox. You're building something that really is the home theatre companion of choice... What's the ultimate goal? I guess you're going to put Blu-ray in there... I don't know if we're putting Blu-ray in there. You'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories...We'll just keep driving forward and keep making the best overall entertainment, not just gaming, experience we can."

So basically, Major is trying to say that Steve Ballmer went from talking about Xbox to talking about PC accessories in a matter of a few minutes? Sorry, but we all get what message you're sending, Major. Thanks for trying, though!

Philip: Silly, Major, fibs are for kids! Seriously, if there was nothing to hide, why would Major waste 15 minutes of his life typing up an easily-broken lie to cover up what Steve Ballman said? What do you guys think? Think Major is telling the truth, or is he desperately trying to cover-up something much bigger?

It's not too hard to imagine a plug-and-play Blu-Ray peripheral intended for PCs, but also compatible with the Xbox 360.
The HD-DVD drive is an excellent example: sure it was marketed as an Xbox peripheral, but it could easily be plugged into any PC or laptop with a USB port and used as an external HD-DVD drive.
I could definitely see an external Blue-Ray drive sold for the PC becoming compatible with the Xbox (and this is definitely the way for MS to go IMHO)

I say just buy a PS3. Not only do you get Blu-ray, but now you can play twice as many games!

I wouldn't exactly say twice as many games.
Also, Blu-Ray players are starting to come down in price, so the PS3 is starting to look more like an expensive gaming system rather than an inexpensive Blu-Ray player (that being said, I still would really like to own one).

Well, before this holiday season I'd probably agree with you. But it does look like they've got some cool stuff coming out in the future. For once I'm thinking that I might actually use my PS3 for something other than watching movies.
