Square President Skeptical of Natal Impact

As impressive as Project Natal was when Microsoft revealed it at this year's E3, Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada wasn't so convinced.  In an interview with the Financial Times, Wada communicated that while this could be the future interface medium for gamers, as of now it's just an improvement on the standard controller.

"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function," he said.

Mike:  The phrase "the future of gaming" is so commonplace it's lost its impact, but even if Microsoft used those words at E3 for purposes of hype I don't think that's their aim with Natal.  I think Wada overestimates what MS is trying to do.  Either that or MS is overly optimistic, but regardless Natal and Sony's Motion Control show some possible breakthroughs in how we control games as long as they're implemented correctly.

These novel control schemes have some real potential. But then, so did the Wii's. I just hope we get more immersion (to use another near meaningless buzzword) and fewer silly party games.

I have expectations, however tempered they may be. Like any other cool-sounding innovation you hear about concerning video games, it'll be as good as what they put into it IMO. The kickball demo was neat, but let's see more. Who knows maybe a game like Mirror's Edge would've been way more fun with something like Natal....
